By Jack Henry Abbott. The book features an introduction by Norman Mailer, who supported Abbott's petition for parole the year the book came out, 1981; the book itself is Abbott's letters TO Mailer about conditions inside. The New York Times gave it a decent review, not knowing that the night before the review came out, Abbott had killed a waiter during a dispute in an East Village restaurant.
Abbott's case has been repurposed in various Law & Order episodes and other cultural artifacts; should you repurpose this paperback for your own reading? I think so; it's got some dings and nicks to the cover edges, and some page toning, but an uncracked spine, and it's a slim tome that fits nicely in a cargo pocket.
