By Edward Jay Epstein. No, he's not taking out after the Sacklers -- Epstein wrote this, an investigative report claiming Nixon set up "a clandestine political police force" and used the citizenry's ignorant dread of narcotics to do it, in the seventies. Epstein's line is conspiracy stuff (his best-known work is on the assassination of JFK) but certainly pinning a wag-the-dog scenario like this on Nixon is a credible angle to take.

The jacket on this hard cover is showing its age -- fading all over, and particularly on the spine; cracks and tears along the top and at the corners -- but the book itself is straight and neat as a pin. Apparently it was shelved and reshelved over the years but perhaps not ever read. A great reading copy and window into the post-Watergate zeitgeist.
