By Theodor Reik. “A renowned psychoanalyst looks at the Unconscious of murderers and detectives and analyzes famous American and European cases.” Reik, one of Freud’s first students in Vienna, pioneered “lay analysis” in the U.S.; this is the sixth of his books to get an English translation.
It’s also from the collection of Hale Lamont-Havers, a midcentury stage actor (Miep in The Diary of Anne Frank was just one of her roles) who moved to Sudbury, MA later in life and began amassing a collection of thousands of books — with a focus on true crime, as Lamont-Havers considered herself an amateur criminologist. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/bostonglobe/name/hale-lamont-havers-obituary?id=56246102
The book itself is in decent shape — the jacket looks a bit rough, what’s left of the spine is quite faded and there’s some visible edgewear and flaking, but inside, the pages are toned but clean and unmarked. The book sits straight; only mild old-book scent. An interesting pick-up for researchers or fans of midcentury profiling.
