By St. Clair McKelway. Would McKelway be as amused as I to see how many online sellers render the title as "from the ANALS of Crime"? Who can say. I can say that this is a revered entry in the genre: a compendium of stories from The New Yorker about, among others, a New York fire chief's oral history of firebugs; "the most expert and persistent subpoena server in history"; and counterfeiter "Mister 880." If you want to know how the older half lived, this is the vintage true-crimer for you.

Less so if you're a stickler for a dust jacket; this hardcover doesn't have one, and a long-ago owner chose to rebind it with...Saran Wrap and cello tape, which as you'll see didn't wear terribly well. Didn't do much to protect the book, either, because there's some cornerwear, and a stain to the outside page edges. But inside, the pages are fairly bright, no dog-ears or writing. If you don't spend too much time with the flyleaves, this is a nice reading copy of a classic.
